Young Adult Romance Workshop with Author Sarah Razner
Love can make characters impulsive, vulnerable, brave, and/or terrified. These emotions are only amplified in the teenage years, as seen in many novels in the hugely popular Young Adult Romance genre of fiction.
Join us for an intimate and curated workshop on how to write believable, well-crafted, and playful YA romance fiction at Lake Literary Center, led by author Sarah Razner. Razner’s debut novel, In Name Only, was released in February 2025, and follows the coming-of-age journey of a teen protagonist from a family synonymous with American political royalty. The crush he develops on a co-worker and their ensuing genuine attraction and chemistry are prime examples of the type of scenes participants will learn how to write in this two-hour workshop on Tuesday, April 8.
Just $40, which includes a curated snack plate, non-alcoholic beverages (water, soda, tea, etc.), and all materials: binder, handouts and worksheets, pen or pencil, and notepad or looseleaf. Bring your laptop or tablet if you wish to take notes electronically, but a computer is not required to take this course. Register here to invest in your writing skills, whether you’re writing a YA Romance novel or short story, or in a different genre entirely. These writing workshop skills are translatable cross-genre. Limited to 6 participants!

Romance Book Club
Join us monthly on second Wednesdays at Lake Lit to discuss the latest—and hottest!—romance novels and to share our favorite enemies-to-lovers tales, friends-to-romance yarns, forbidden love stories, will-they-or-won’t-they sagas, and more.
The April meeting of Lake Literary Center’s and Lunar & Lake Book Market’s new collaborative monthly Romance Book Club will meet on Wednesday, April 9!
This $15 ticket includes a non-alcoholic beverage (soda, sparkling water, or tea) and snack plate at the book club event. We assume if you purchase this ticket that you’re bringing your own copy of the book.
We’re reading WILD SIDE by Elsie Silver for our April 9 Book Club. A little about the book to rev up your reading engine:
I’d always dreamed of my wedding day. But not like this. Not looking into the eyes of the man who betrayed me.
But when my nephew’s guardianship is contested, I decide I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him in Rose Hill. Even if it means marrying the enemy.
Rhys Dupris.
A man who is secretive, broody, and completely infuriating. A man whose work takes him away for weeks on end and brings him back covered in mysterious bruises—ones he won’t talk about. In fact, we barely talk at all.
Which would be fine, except when he’s not talking, he’s staring. And the way he looks at me is borderline indecent.
The tension between us has always been palpable. But living under the same roof is a dangerous temptation.
I swore I would never forgive him. But that was before I knew the man behind the mask. The one who’s fierce and protective. The one who’s gentle and patient. The one who shows up for us when we need him most.
He’s not at all who I thought he was.
And that makes hating my husband so much harder… and loving him just a little too easy.

But these stories often offer new perspectives, spark meaningful conversations, and reflect the complexities of the world we live in. By reading a banned book, you’re celebrating the power of stories to challenge, inspire, and educate.

Lake Lit Out Loud - Poetry and Prose Open Mic
Fond du Lac’s premier poetry and prose open mic will continue in 2025 at a new location! Art of Spoken Word found its origins at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts under the guidance of local writers and THELMA staff. Now, join us for a revamped and improved open mic experience!
The event will remain FREE, and our intention is to preserve the casual, supportive open mic spirit of the program while introducing some new, fun elements: a microphone and podium for those who wish to stand to read aloud, writing prompts for each month, and food and beverages! As part of the move to a new location, the event will also have a new name: Lake Lit Out Loud.
We can’t wait for you all to join us in sharing our prose, poetry, or memoir aloud at the new Lake Lit Out Loud. The open mic will also remain on the same date—always the third Wednesday evening of every month.
April 16 Writing Prompts / Themes:
National Poetry Month, poems on writing poetry, Easter, the Resurrection, Ishtar, springtime, fertility, blooming flowers, April rain
Lake Lit Out Loud Guidelines:
Arrive at 6:30 and sign up, or if you’re just attending to listen, grab a snack and drink. We’ll start readings at 6:45.
Please keep your total reading to 8 minutes or less, and please plan on presenting 3 or fewer pieces, all at the same time. The sign-up sheet at the beginning of the event will reflect the order in which we read.
Please plan on standing or sitting at your chosen spot in the room to read your piece(s) aloud. The group will clap or snap in appreciation, and then the next reader will go. We’d like to limit prescriptive feedback on the pieces and discussion between each presented piece, given that this program is for practice reading the written word aloud, rather than a workshop setting. There will be time at the end of the open mic to discuss the presented work and chat about our writing processes.
Please preface your piece with any content warnings regarding violence, sexual assault, excessive drug or alcohol use, or other potentially triggering content. No hate speech of any kind will be tolerated.

—Best practices for submissions
If you have written a book and are seeking representation or a publisher, or planning to self-publish, this is the workshop for you! Similarly, if you’re writing poems or short stories that you hope to publish, we’ll also have tons of information for you. This is a lecture-style workshop but we will have plenty of time for questions during the event.

Why a Banned Book Club? Books are banned or challenged for various reasons — controversial themes, language, or ideas that some consider too provocative or culturally inappropriate.

June 18 Writing Prompts / Themes:
Fatherhood and having or not having a father, Juneteenth day, emancipation, reparations, PRIDE and LGBTQ+, summer solstice and longest day of sunlight of the year
Lake Lit Out Loud Guidelines:

Interested in nerding out about fae books? Or maybe you can’t make it to the Fae Ball the next day but still would like some bookish community. Perhaps you’re a bit of an introvert and would prefer a smaller meet-and-greet before the big party! Whatever your reason for seeking a Friday night book party before the big Fae Ball, we’re here for you at Lake Literary Center. Join us on Friday, November 14 from 5:30 - 7:30 PM at Lake Lit for snacks, beverages, costume prep, and fae book talk in a glittering, fae-enchanted, cozy space.

Whether you’re a full-fledged fae fiction fan or simply dabble in faerie reads, we’ll have plenty to talk about at Lake Lit.
Keep an eye out for more details on vendors that will be at this event, from fae wing-making to crowns! Limited to 30 fae fans.

Romance Book Club
Join us monthly on second Wednesdays at Lake Lit to discuss the hottest—and sometimes spicy!—romance novels and to share our favorite sweet yarns about enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-romance, and more.
The second meeting of Lake Literary Center’s and Lunar & Lake Book Market’s new collaborative monthly Romance Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Mar. 12. We’ll be discussing Dream Girl Drama by Tessa Bailey. A little about the book to rev up your reading engine:
When professional hockey player Sig Gauthier’s car breaks down and his phone dies, he treks into a posh private country club to call a tow truck, where he encounters the alluring Chloe Clifford, the manic pixie dream girl who captivates him immediately with her sense of adventure and penchant for stealing champagne.
Sparks fly during a moonlight kiss and the enamored pair can’t wait to see each other again, but when Sig finally arrives to meet his dad’s new girlfriend over dinner, Chloe is confusingly also there. Turns out the girlfriend is Chloe’s mother. Oh, and they’re engaged.
Sig’s dream girl is his future stepsister.
Though the pair is now wary of being involved romantically, Chloe, a sheltered harp prodigy, yearns to escape her controlling mother. Sig promises to teach her the ins and outs of independence in Boston—but not inside his bedroom. They both know there can never be more than friendship between a famous hockey player and his high-society, soon-to-be stepsister. But keeping their relationship platonic grows harder amid the developing family drama, especially knowing they were meant for so much more…
There are two ticket options - one that includes a paperback copy of the book for $30 and one that assumes you’re bringing your own copy, whether purchased elsewhere or borrowed from your local library, for $15. Both ticket options include a non-alcoholic beverage (soda, sparkling water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate or apple cider) and snack plate. The $30 ticket includes a paperback copy of the book, which will be available for pickup at Lunar & Lake by January 12, one month ahead of the Book Club.

Making Waves Reading Series | IN NAME ONLY BY SARAH RAZNER
Join Fond du Lac romance author Sarah Razner for a celebration of the publication of her debut novel, In Name Only, which was released February 11, 2025! There will be free refreshments. FREE to attend; Razner will have books for sale at the end of the reading through Lunar & Lake Book Market.
From a young age, Sarah Razner was drawn to stories. Growing up in Wisconsin, she spent much of her time reading. Later, when she realized the tales in her imagination did not have to remain there, she began writing and loved it so much she decided to build her career around it. Sarah graduated from Marian University with a degree in Communications and minors in English Writing and History. For almost four years, she worked as a news assistant and reporter, covering everything from local events and government to the history of Wisconsin's prison system. For the past four years, Sarah has worked as a marketing and communications director, where she continues to have the opportunity to tell stories. Since 2019, she has been a contributor to the online magazine and writing collective, The Prompt Mag. In Name Only is her first novel. Razner also will be teaching a romance fiction workshop at Lake Literary Center in downtown Fond du Lac in April 2025.
About In Name Only:
To America, the Campbell family is a political dynasty, known for its tight-knit bond, kindness, and incredible work to better the world. To Nate Campbell, it is a lie. In his 16 years, he's seen enough calculation, manipulation, and deception to never want to touch the toxic family legacy; but as the grandson of the former president, nephew of current president, and son of the Senate Majority Whip, that's not an option. His future is set: to succeed and smile while slowly suffocating beneath the heavy expectations of the family name, comparisons he can never satisfy, and ridicule for his true passions - art and comic books. Starved for anonymity and autonomy, Nate becomes a server at a Fistful of Drumsticks - a movie-themed restaurant where everyone is in costume and he is just another hidden face. There, he meets Della, who lives vibrantly, and cares little for American royalty. For the first time, he has the chance to build a life of his own and see what it means to be Nate and not Nathan Campbell. That is, if his parents and frenemies don't find out.
The Making Waves Reading Series features self-published authors whose books have been released within the last year. Quarterly author readings, signings, book sales, and conversation at Lake Lit, most quarters of the year on the fourth Thursday of the month. For 2025, the Making Waves Reading Series will present authors on February 27, May 22, and August 28.

Poetry Book Club
Fond du Lac has a rich poetry tradition and many poets reside in the immediate area. From the original Foot of the Lake Poetry Collective to the Lake Reading Series, poets have long called Fond du Lac home. In honor of these poets’ work—and their own poetic and authorly inspirations—we will host a monthly poetry book club at Lake Lit on third Thursdays from 3-5 PM. We will meet most third Thursdays of the month except for October and December.
For our February 20, 2025 poetry club, we will discuss Then The War: and Selected Poems, 2007-2020, by Carl Phillips, in honor of Black History Month. The Lake Lit Poetry Book Club will always be FREE, but we ask that you register ahead of time and source the book on your own, whether from your local library or closest independent bookseller.

February 19 Writing Prompts / Themes:
Love, fertility, Saints Valentine, Galatin's Day, Lupercalia, Ancient Rome, Gelasius, Shakespeare's love depictions, Chaucer's Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day stories

CANCELED FOR 2/18/25 DUE TO EXTREME COLD - Banned Books Club
Join us monthly on third Tuesdays at Lake Lit to discuss the latest choice read in our banned books club. This book club will always be free, though minimum $5 donations for time and space use, plus provided refreshments, are encouraged. Pre-registration required; no walk-ins.
First up in our Banned Book Club is The 1619 Project by Nikole-Hannah Jones and The New York Times Magazine, in honor of Black History Month.
”A dramatic expansion of a groundbreaking work of journalism, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story offers a profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present.
In late August 1619, a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin, but it is more than that: It is the source of so much that still defines the United States.
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning 1619 Project issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This book substantially expands on that work, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance. The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society, from politics, music, diet, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democracy itself.
The 1619 Project speaks directly to our current moment, contextualizing the systems of race and caste within which we operate today. It reveals long-glossed-over truths around our nation’s founding and construction—and the way that the legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation, but continues to shape contemporary American life.”
Why a Banned Book Club? Books are banned or challenged for various reasons — controversial themes, language, or ideas that some consider too provocative or culturally inappropriate. But these stories often offer new perspectives, spark meaningful conversations, and reflect the complexities of the world we live in. By reading a banned book, you’re celebrating the power of stories to challenge, inspire, and educate.

We’re reading THE STRIKER by Ana Huang for our Feb. 17 Book Club. A little about the book to rev up your reading engine:
Asher Donovan is a living legend―the darling of the Premier League, the (arguably) greatest footballer in the world.
But his reckless antics and recent team transfer have caused much controversy, and when his feud with his rival-turned-teammate costs them a championship, they're forced to "bond" during off-season cross-training.
Surviving the summer shouldn't be hard…until Asher meets their new trainer. She's beautiful, talented, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't take his mind off her.
The only problem? She's his rival's sister―and completely off limits.
***
Scarlett DuBois is a former prima ballerina whose career was cut short by a tragic accident.
Now a teacher at a prestigious dance academy but still haunted by the ghosts of her past, the last thing she wants is to spend the summer cross-training Asher Donovan, of all people.
She swore she would never date a footballer, but when her brother leaves town for an emergency, she finds herself thrown into dangerously close proximity with the gorgeous, charming striker.
Training, she can deal with. But falling in love? That's out of the question―especially when he's the only person with the power to break her heart.

In SOULMATE, Alaina Ryan, a renowned scientist who has dedicated her life to studying the mysteries of human consciousness, collides with Jake Matthews by chance when she travels to Chicago for a gallery exhibition of her late mother’s work. Their momentary connection proves to be life-altering for them both. Following an unexpected incident that leaves her trapped between life and death, Alaina finds herself with the unique opportunity to explore the true nature of human consciousness while separated from her physical self. As she navigates this uncharted territory, she uncovers profound revelations about identity, purpose, and the human experience. Simultaneously, Jake discovers he is able to connect with Alaina through his dreams. Each night, their shared dream world becomes a haven where they can be together without the limitations of their individual realities. Nothing is as it seems in this unsettling love story.
